Dennis Bell, recently named Canadian representative of the Bell Family Association, is a 56-year-old retired print and television journalist living in Burnaby, B.C., a suburb of Vancouver on the Canadian West Coast. Dennis is a second-generation Canadian.
His father was born in Canada, but his grandfather, Alexander Bell, was born in Largo, Fife, and emigrated to Western Canada from Scotland around 1910. His grandmother, Cecilia Blackwood Thomson Bell, was born in Edinburgh and followed her husband across the Atlantic in 1913. Both of them returned to Britain at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 -- he with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, while she was one of the very early members of Britain's Women's Royal Air Force. In addition to the BFA, Dennis is also a member of the Fife Family History Society and writes articles for their quarterly publication in Scotland as well as for ours. He is attempting a biography of Col. Ninian Bell (Beall) of Maryland. The Largo-born Scottish pioneer is, he believes, a distant relative.
