Restoring the Chiefship of Clan Bell

For nearly four hundred years, Clan Bell has stood without a recognized Chief.

Our last widely acknowledged chief, William "Redcloak" Bell, died around 1628. Since then, the chiefship has remained dormant, making Clan Bell what is known as an armigerous clan—a clan that exists, but currently has no officially recognized Chief.

While our history is rich, our story is still being written.

Today, Bells from around the world have an opportunity to help shape the future of our clan.

Why Does This Matter?

A recognized Chief serves as the symbolic head of the clan, preserving its heritage, representing its interests, and providing continuity for future generations.

Scottish law, administered through the Court of the Lord Lyon, provides a pathway for armigerous clans like ours to work toward restoring a chiefship.

One important step in that journey is the appointment of a Commander.

Where We Stand Today

In 2019, members of Clan Bell gathered in Gretna Green, Scotland, for a Bell Family Convention to consider the appointment of a Commander.

After reviewing the petition, the Court of the Lord Lyon concluded that more worldwide participation was needed before such an appointment could be made.

The message was clear: Clan Bell needed to demonstrate broader international support and engagement.

Since then, Clan Bell North America and Bell organizations around the world have worked to grow our membership, strengthen our presence at Highland Games, preserve our history, and connect Bell families across the globe.

Now we continue building toward that goal.

How Can You Help?

Whether you live in Scotland, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, or anywhere else in the world...

Your voice matters.

As we move toward a future Bell Family Convention, we want to hear from Bell descendants everywhere. By sharing your interest and participating in the conversation, you help demonstrate that Clan Bell is active, united, and ready to take the next steps toward restoring its chiefship.

Together, we can help ensure that the Bells are represented once again among Scotland's historic clans.

Every response helps us better understand the worldwide Bell family and demonstrates the strength of our growing clan community.

Our history spans centuries. The next chapter begins with all of us.
